WhatsApp has evolved from a messaging app into a full business communication platform. But the terminology can be confusing. WhatsApp Business App, WhatsApp Business API, Green Tick verification — what's the difference, and which one do you need?
The Three Tiers of WhatsApp Business
WhatsApp offers three distinct business solutions, each designed for different scales and use cases:
| Feature | WhatsApp Business App | WhatsApp Business API | Green Tick Verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Designed for | Small businesses | Medium-large enterprises | Established brands |
| Messaging limits | Manual, one device | 1,000-100,000+ messages/day | Unlimited (with API) |
| Automation | Basic quick replies | Full chatbot & CRM integration | Full API capabilities |
| Verified badge | No | No (by default) | Yes — green checkmark |
| Multi-agent support | No | Yes | Yes |
| Cost | Free | Conversation-based pricing | Premium setup + API costs |
What Is Green Tick Verification?
The green tick (officially called the Official Business Account badge) is WhatsApp's highest level of business verification. It signals to customers that WhatsApp has confirmed this is an authentic, notable business — not an impersonator or spam account.
Green tick verification is not something you can simply request. WhatsApp proactively reviews businesses based on notability, authenticity, and adherence to commerce policies. A verified Business Manager is required to even be considered.
When to Upgrade
Here's a simple decision framework:
- Stick with the WhatsApp Business App if you handle fewer than 100 customer conversations per day and don't need automation.
- Move to WhatsApp Business API when you need multi-agent support, CRM integration, automated notifications (order confirmations, shipping updates), or bulk messaging capabilities.
- Pursue Green Tick verification when brand trust is critical to your conversion funnel — typically for e-commerce brands, financial services, and businesses where impersonation is a risk.
The Setup Process
Getting WhatsApp Business API with green tick requires:
- A verified Facebook Business Manager (this is mandatory — no exceptions)
- A phone number not registered with any existing WhatsApp account
- Business documentation matching your BM's verified business information
- A Business Solution Provider (BSP) to host the API, or self-hosting capability
The entire process typically takes 1-4 weeks, depending on WhatsApp's review queue and documentation quality.
